It is 2016 and this is the third Great Alaskan RV Adventure we've been fortunate to do over the past six years! Through Craig's List back in 2008, we've made friends with a family in Fairbanks with whom we have been bartering our timeshare unit in Hawaii for their 29' 2006 Winnebago Outlook motor home.
As with our 2010 and 2014 Great Alaskan RV Adventures, this trip spanned 15 days based out of Fairbanks. We've done the trip frequently enough, that we've got the pre-trip logistics ironed out to near perfection. This year we were able to take everything we needed in just one large roller duffle bag coming in at exactly 50 pounds. Packing "light" is essential for several reasons, including not losing stuff along the way during side trips or excursions away from the RV.
With laundry facilities conveniently located at Denali National Park and RV campgrounds, there is no reason why you need to bring a lot with you. The biggest consideration as to what clothes to bring is the weather. Temperatures and precipitation can be very unpredictable and variable, especially if you are planning to move around the state. Weather in Fairbanks can be very different from Denali, versus Anchorage and points south . . . or the port communities of Whittier or Valdez on the Prince William Sound.
Ordinarily I write my travel blogs on a daily basis, recapping the highlights and experiences of the day. For this trip, however, I'm going to structure my writing more based on the places we visited and things we did. I think that will make the blog a bit more interesting, although each entry may seem to run long. I'll try to be succinct and only share stories, information and photos that I think folks will be interested in.
I'll wrap up with a post trip summary that will include some additional planning tips along with a financial summary that will help others budget for their own Great Alaskan Adventure. So let's go!
